Finding Clarity in an Uncertain World

Introduction

If you're like most people I talk to, you have a desire to seek God's wisdom to help you be a successful leader at work, at home and in your community. You're a talented individual who seeks God's guidance to do the right thing, make a difference and contribute to a greater good. Unfortunately, life is messy. We're faced with dilemmas and decisions that don't have black and white solutions. Rather, our circumstances are often filled with unanswered questions, paradoxes and uncertainty. I call this the gray zone - a time where the right direction isn't easily discernable.

A memorable Larry King Live program featured Dr. Robert H. Schuller and his son, the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Schuller. They were discussing uncertainty and the role God played. In rapid-fire succession, Larry King shot questions at the pastors: "Why did God allow the tsunami to kill so many people in Southeast Asia? Why did so many people have to die from Hurricane Katrina?

The tension diffused as the younger pastor calmly responded, "Larry, the real question isn't how or why we're going to die. We're all going to die. The real question is 'How are we going to live?'"

Just as Larry King did, we often deal with uncertainty by demanding answers thinking they'll bring clarity. God is My Coach will take the opposite approach. Rather than demanding an answer, we will choose to live with the question. Our approach is to live, learn and lead within the context of uncertainty, not in the absence of it. Why? Because uncertainty keeps us dependent on God. We all have an eternal hunger to search for the Truth, grow closer to God and live a life of significance. Uncertainty is the catalyst that leads us to God. God is My Coach is the means to living a significant life and to leading others in an uncertain world.

I believe our true greatness as leaders lies within the gray. By being willing to dwell in the gray, you have the opportunity to search out and understand how God has uniquely designed and called you. The resulting blessing is a series of gifts in the midst of your uncertainty. Cultivating these gifts results in clarity in your chaos and the full and abundant life God promised you. In the end, developing these gifts transforms your grayness into greatness.
In the coming weeks, we'll ask thought-provoking questions to help you live, learn and lead within the context of uncertainty. Next week, we'll answer the question, "How can I integrate my career with my calling?" Join with me then to discover your purpose -- the gift of your unique calling.
It's great to be with you on the journey!
